ABOUT GRINGO
Gringo in Portugal is about exploring the country beyond the usual tourist routes — travelling slowly, mostly by road, and discovering the places that often get missed.
It’s not about ticking off sights or chasing trends. It’s about curiosity, freedom, and seeing Portugal as it really is.
I'm Chris and my connection with Portugal goes back more than 20 years. What began as travel gradually turned into something deeper, shaped by time spent exploring the country and building personal ties here.
My wife is Portuguese, and we were married in Porto in 2006 — a city that holds special meaning for us and continues to be a base for many of our journeys. Over the years, repeated visits have allowed me to see Portugal beyond first impressions, from well‑known regions to quieter corners that rarely feature in guidebooks.
Travelling mostly by car has been central to that experience. Some trips are done in my own vehicle, others with a hired car, but the approach is always the same: follow interesting roads, take detours, and see where they lead.
Real Life. Real Portugal.

Philosophy
I believe Portugal is best experienced at your own pace.
The moments that stay with you are often the unplanned ones,
a quiet village, a coastal road, a café stop you didn’t expect.
That philosophy guides both the journeys and the recommendations shared here. If something isn’t useful, reliable, or good value, it doesn’t get promoted.
If you enjoy road trips, hidden places, and a more relaxed way of travelling, you’re in the right place.
